On the CAT 3162 engines, there has been installed a Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV). I guess the ventilation that the engines had before were not so good for the environment. So Cummins came up with a more environmentaly friendly filtration closed crankcase ventilation system. It protects the engine and provides a good solution for emissions removal, helping to reduce oil consumption by eliminating mist, aerosol vapors and oil drip. ( for more info: http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/html/en/products/crankcase/crankcase_ventilation.html )

The filter inside the black box needs to changed every so aften. If you don't you will have oil leaks in different places. The more miles the engine the more oil the engine spits out.
